Frequently Asked Questions
Is TomYaYa really free?
Yes! The free version includes duplicate detection, basic media viewer, and limited conversions (10 files/day). The Pro version ($19 one-time) unlocks unlimited conversions, AV1 video encoding, batch processing, and removes ads.
Why does TomYaYa need Chrome/Chromium?
TomYaYa uses Chrome's built-in AVIF, AV1, and Opus encoders for compression. This approach ensures you get the latest, most efficient encoders without bundling large codec libraries. Chrome runs in headless mode - you won't see it.
Is my data safe? Does TomYaYa upload my files?
Absolutely safe. TomYaYa works 100% offline. Your files never leave your device. All scanning, hashing, and compression happens locally on your computer.
Will compression reduce image/video quality?
Modern codecs like AVIF and AV1 are "perceptually lossless" at reasonable quality settings. At quality 80+, most people cannot distinguish compressed files from originals. You can always preview before converting.
Can I convert files back to original format?
Compression is a one-way process - you cannot "uncompress" an AVIF back to the exact original JPEG. We recommend keeping originals until you've verified the compressed versions meet your needs.
